A Pox on All Their Houses
That Trump is reduced to veep choices like Greene and Lake shows how low the GOP has gone....
With Donald Trump so far ahead in the GOP Primary polls, and with the mainstream media bending over backward for the third election in a row to ensure he is the Republican nominee, you won’t be surprised to learn that the media is now talking about the Donald Trump veepstakes.
Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kari Lake have been locked in what one source close to Donald Trump describes to Rolling Stone as a “death race” to become his 2024 vice presidential pick.
In public, the far-right congresswoman from Georgia and the failed Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidate are happy to present an image of calm unity in their cause to return Trump to the White House. But behind the scenes, the two view one another with intense distrust and disdain, each seeing the other as direct competition for Trump’s political affections, according to four people with knowledge of the matter.
Exacerbating the situation is the fact that Greene and Lake are the two leading contenders in a very narrow lane in the race to secure Trump’s VP slot, should he win the 2024 Republican nomination next year. It’s the lane of election-denying, shameless Trump diehard who has emerged as a conspiracy-theory-slinging star among the conservative base.
Greene, in particular, has gone beyond simple attempts to raise her own profile in the ongoing Trump veepstakes. In recent weeks, she has moved behind the scenes to tear down Lake, garrulously trash-talking her to others in the MAGA elite, political circles, and conservative media, multiple sources tell Rolling Stone.
It’s hard to imagine either of these two knuckleheads being a heartbeat away from the Presidency, but here we are.
Amusingly, the story continues:
In an ironic twist, one of the bigger complaints coming from Greene — who years ago cemented her public image as a QAnon-promoting, school-shooting-survivor-mocking, Jewish-Space-Laser-fearing activist — lately is that Lake is not a “serious” enough person to be Trump’s second-in-command.
Amusing because neither Greene nor Lake are serious people. I wouldn’t trust them to be Vice President of the Glee Club, much less Vice Presidentof the United States.
The entire story would be funny were it not so sad. Let’s take a look at some of t Trump’s shortlist back in 2016: it was Mike Pence, Chris Christie, and Newt Gingrich. Three individuals with a track record of electoral success and, in the cases of two of them, executive-level experience. Nobody would question that, if the need arose, the three of them were ready to accept the challenges of the Presidency.
Let’s take a look at the list of potential candidates for Vice President next year beyond Greene and Lake:
Richard Grenell;
Mark Meadows;
Mike Pompeo;
Elise Stefanik
Tommy Tuberville
Kristi Noem
Sarah Palin
Michael Flynn
Dan Bongino
Mike Lindell
Herschel Walker
Mark Robinson
Were this to come to pass, Republicans would not be sending us their best. Dan Quayle was more qualified than this crew. The Republicans could end up nominating the least qualified major party candidate for Vice President since Arthur Sewall.
I’m sure there are other people who would gladly don the kneepads in order to be considered. Like this guy.
The problem for Trump is obvious. In 2016, enough credible Republicans were willing to play ball in order to win the 2016 election. Trump then proceeded to emasculate Mike Pence for four years, then sent a lynch mob to get him on January 6th when Pence finally stiffened up and did the right thing.
Between how he treated Pence and his 91 criminal indictments, no morally upright leaders will be interested in serving as his running mate. Nor, given how much Trump has closed his circle these days, would Trump ever consider a running mate outside of those pledging their undying fealty to him.
A pox on Trump for letting it get here. A pox to the Republican grifters who enabled him. And a pox on the voters who continue to support this clown. God help us all.
