A Spherical Distraction
Wes Moore wants to talk about anything other than his ineptitude
Maryland Governor Wes Moore managed to find a way yesterday to distract from the $1.5 billion deficit he created.
Instead of talking about the budget and ways to close the budget deficit, Wes Moore made an announcement that Maryland is getting a Sphere for some reason:
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said Sunday that a “mini-Sphere” — a little brother to the famous Sphere in Las Vegas — is planned for National Harbor in Oxon Hill.
Sphere Entertainment Co. is working with Maryland, Prince George’s County and Peterson Companies. This venue would be the second in the U.S., after the Las Vegas venue which opened in 2023.
The proposed venue would be the first smaller-scale Sphere with capacity of 6,000 seats, and feature an Exosphere — the exterior LED display of Sphere that showcases both artistic and branded content, according to a release.
Of course, the devil is in the details. Becuase there is nothing really to announce yet:
The proposed venue is still being negotiated on and awaiting approvals from Sphere, Prince George’s County and the state of Maryland.
A completion date has not yet been announced.
So, Wes Moore went out of his way to announce a project that is 1. Not yet agreed to; 2. Not yet approved and 3. Does not even have an anticipated completion date. All in the middle of the Maryland General Assembly session, where lawmakers are stuck trying to patch over Moore’s budgetary mistakes.
Given how poorly Moore’s first three years in office have gone, and given how Moore is underwater in polling right now, it is not surprising that Wes Moore would pull a Trump-like distraction to take attention away from the issues in Maryland. However, the reality is that Wes Moore turned Maryland’s multi-billion-dollar budget surplus into a $1.5 billion budget deficit in record time. And no wiz-bang new venues are going to fix that without adult leadership that Moore is incapable of providing.
