American Eats: Arizona. Maswik Food Court and Pizza Pub
In my experience, Arizona has not been a great food state. I have never found a restaurant that served great food. I’m sure there are plenty; no hate mail, please. But I just haven’t found one that has piqued my interest yet.
Instead, my favorite Arizona restaurant experience has been at the Maswik Food Court and Pizza Pub at the Grand Canyon.
In 2018, my family and I went on a great road trip, driving from Maryland to Utah. It was a fantastic trip. And a few more places we ate at will appear in this series. But it was the first time we ever had the opportunity to visit at the Grand Canyon.
And no, the pictures of the Grand Canyon do not do it justice compared to seeing the thing in person.
In order to be cheap frugal, we stayed at one of the motel-style accommodations inside Grand Canyon National Park. It turned out it was that building’s last season before they tore it down. Probably because it had no air conditioning. In Arizona. In the middle of summer. If that sounds pleasant, it was not.
The Maswik Food Court and Pizza Pub was the large, cafeteria-style setting where you could purchase three squares a day. The Pizza Pub served pretty decent pizza and a pretty good selection of beer.
The rest of the food? It was a pedestrian cafeteria with the food you would expect in a cafeteria-style setting. It wasn’t great. It wasn’t terrible. It was just there.
What makes this special, however, is the location. Just steps from one of the natural wonders of the world. A place we visited on a fun trip from which we have a lot of memories.
While I look forward to finding a new favorite place to eat in Arizona someday, the memories of this trip are more than enough to hold me over.
