American Eats: Arkansas. White River Rest Area
Surprise….
Arkansas is one of the few states that I have never overnighted in. More importantly, it is the only state in which I have never eaten a meal.
My one experience eating in Arkansas? I grabbed a snack at the White River Rest Area along Interstate 40, driving east from Broken Arrow, OK to Memphis.
The one thing I remember about the experience? The humidity.
It was early on a Sunday morning, around 9 am or so, in the middle of July.
As I pulled over, I opened the car and was smacked in the face with the thickest humidity I have ever felt. I’m not sure exactly what the humidity was that day. But the air temperature, even at that early hour, was well over 90 degrees. It is rare that it’s so hot, so humidity, so moist that you break into a dripping sweat taking fifty steps from a car to a bathroom. But on that morning and in that place, it happened.
It felt a lot like what living in a sauna must feel like.
Not all stories about the American eating experience are as good as all the others…
