American Eats: Delaware. Grotto Pizza
Pizza and the beach go together rather well. There are tons of places to get pizza up and down the coast on the Delmarva Peninsula. There are some area chains, of course. Ledo’s is great if you like pizza that lacks both cheese and sauce. Pizza Boli’s is even more mediocre than Ledo’s. There’s Dough Roller, which to me is practically inedible.
No, Delaware provides us with the gold standard for pizza at the beach. And that is Grotto Pizza.
The important thing about a place like Grotto is location, location, location. There are 21 Grotto location, just about all of them but one at the beach area. Several are along the Boardwalks of their respective beaches, including the one pictured above on the Rehobeth Boardwalk. It is the best pizza at the beach, bar none. It provides an air-conditioned place to get some time out of the sun, get some food, and recharge for the rest of your day at the beach.
They also sell slices to go, a feature that comes in clutch when you want a snack but don’t want to take the time to stop what you’re doing.
Grotto also is a kid-friendly setting that provides options beyond just pizza. Pasta, sandwiches, burgers and more are all available on the menu. It’s a little bit of something for everybody.
Combine that with affordable prices, and Grotto is a can’t miss.
Many people in the Delmarva area have memories of eating at Grotto Pizza on their trips to the beach, myself included. Here’s to generations more.
