American Eats: Kansas. Sonic.
If you ever get the chance to visit Wichita, don’t.
I was there one time, back in 2007. Now to be fair, the internet and finding things to do in the middle of the midwest in the tail end of fall wasn’t quite as easy as it was then. I wasn’t aware of the Kansas Aviation Museum or The Original Pizza Hut Museum. They would be worth visiting.
The rest of the city was not much to look at in 2007.
So I found myself, desperate to find someplace decent to eat. And ended up at the one place that I could trust myself to eat that I couldn’t get at home. A Sonic.
If you have been to Sonic, you know what you need to do. Get a hamburger, get a shake, and get some onion rings. These are things that Sonic does rather well.
But what makes that particular trip to Sonic in that particular is that I took it back to my hotel and ate it while I watched a Republican Presidential debate. Yes, I remember sitting in my room at eating a burger while watching Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, and Fred Thompson duke it out.
Yeah. That’s what I remember about Wichita.
Maybe one day I will return to Wichita. Hopefully the food scene is better…..
