American Eats: Mississippi. Huck's Place

You may not think of Cajun-Creole cuisine at a semi-upscale downtown restaurant being something you find in Columbus, Mississippi. But that’s because you haven’t heard of Huck’s Place.

Google describes Huck’s Place as “Cajun-Creole cafe & bar in a historic building with dark woods, black & white photos & live music.” And it is all of those things. It is a dark building, with wooden features. But it also has SEC flags flying from the walls as well. It was a weird juxtaposition, but it was appropriate given the craft beer and cocktails the place also sold.

I got the Chicken Creole Pasta, which was Chicken, Tasso Ham, Sautéed Vegetables, and Penne Pasta Tossed in a Spicy Creole Cream Sauce. If you like those components separately, you will love them together as they came together to create a pasta that was appropriately spicy, but not so spicy that it can’t be tolerated by the most mild palate.

It paired nicely with Lazy Magnolia’s Southern Pecan beer, the world’s first beer brewed with roasted pecans. A great beer that you did not even recognize that you would love.

Columbus is a long way off the beaten path in Eastern Mississippi, but I challenge you to find a better restaurant in the state.
