American Eats: Montana. Cattleman's Cut
If there is one thing Montana has a lot of, it’s cattle ranches. Which is why it’s a particularly good place to get a steak.
In 2008, I had steak at a place that was, at the time, called a supper club.
Cattleman’s Cut was a so-called “supper club” on a frontage road off Interstate 15 in Great Falls.
A “supper club” is defined as “a traditional dining establishment that also functions as a social club. The term may describe different establishments depending on the region, but in general, supper clubs tend to present themselves as having a high-class image, even if the price is affordable to all.”
This wasn’t exactly like that. It was just a fancy way of saying that it was a restaurant. But it was a restaurant that was very Montana. Dark interior. Cowboy theme. Farm implements.
But it was a delicious steak, a sirloin that was cooked perfectly as I ordered it. Good steak. Good sides. Very interesting decor.
In the intervening 15 years since I first went to Cattleman’s Cut, they have actually significantly changed. They dropped the “supper club” gimmick and rebranded it as a “Steak House.” They also moved locations from a semi-remote frontage road to a more prominent place in Great Falls.
But if I find my way back to Great Falls, I would be happy to grab a steak at their new location.
