American Eats: New York. Duff's Famous Wings.
New York State has quite a bit to choose from. Of course, it is also much, MUCH more than New York City alone. There are great places to choose in New York City, of course: Pomme Frites, S’mac, and innumerable pizza joints.
But I’m not going to talk about any of that and instead, I’m going to talk about New York State’s other restaurant delicacy that has become an American Institution: the Buffalo Wing.
Like many of the historic foods of America (including even the potato chip, also a New York State original), the Buffalo wing is a food for which there are many origin stories. The joint most closely associated with the creation of the wing is The Anchor Bar. The Anchor is one of the two most notable wing joints in Buffalo.
The other is Duff’s Famous Wings.
There are three places that I would eat wings from regardless of the circumstances. Two are in Maryland; Wingman in Pasadena and Spartan on Eastern Avenue in Baltimore. Duff’s is the third. Just look at these things.
They were truly a thing of beauty. And as is probably apparent, there were no frills at the original Duff’s, where we ate in 2016. A concrete slab of a building along the road. The wings speak for themselves, being meaty with a flavorful Buffalo-style sauce. While I got that mild (since that’s more to my palate) the flavors go up from there. I mean, Medium is listed as “HOT”.
Wither he who attempts “Death Sauce”.
If you’re on your way to Canada and find yourself in Buffalo, you owe it to yourself to stop at the best wings in Buffalo.
