American Eats: Oregon. Pine State Biscuits
I have a love/hate relationship with Portland. Portland is a beautiful and interesting city. Portland’s politics and some of the people who are hanging around in Portland make me want to vomit.
My most relevant example of this was at a Portland Beavers game in 2010 on the 4th of July and some jackass turned his back on the flag during the National Anthem. That’s Portland, folks.
What’s wild about Portland is the weird and different cuisines that you can find in Portland. While best known for Voodoo Donuts, Portland has some other delicious treats too. Like Pine State Biscuits, another Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives favorite.
I was one of the last customers in July 2010 to eat at their original location. They moved their flagship location shortly there after that and have now expanded to four locations across Portland and one in Reno, Nevada.
I tend to not try staples like biscuits and gravy outside of the south. But any place that serves biscuits as good as Pine State does and also will serve them with a glass bottle of Cheerwine on the side (!) is worth of my spending. I even ignored the fact that it was mushroom gravy and I hate mushrooms.
When in Portland and you want a good meal presumably away from some of the people who Keep Portland Weird, this is the kind of place you want to hit.
