American Eats: Rhode Island. California Taco Shop.
Rhode Island is, of course, our smallest state. Known as the Ocean State, you would expect Rhode Island to be famous for joints that sell seafood in various forms. There are plenty of those joints. You would not expect Rhode Island to have a delicious chain of taco shops. But there is at least one.
I ate at the California Taco Shop on Plain Street in Providence back in 2017. I had just visited the Providence Cathedral and needed a bite before continuing my travels, so I found a very highly-rated taco shop right around the corner. I went and I did not regret it.
These were not tacos they were just simple tacos put together hoping that you wouldn’t notice they mailed it in. Instead, these were tasty Mexican-style tacos using fresh ingredients. The restaurant was a bit bougie for my tastes, to be honest. But they were good tacos at a reasonable price.
There are a dozen California Taco Shops across the Ocean State, so if you ever find yourself there and craving something that is not seafood, you might want to give this place a try.
