For some reason, the Orioles unveiled a new home run celebration. Gone is the Home Run Chain of last year and it has been replaced by…..
Yes, that appears to be a Beer Bong. Not even a purchased Beer Bong. But one that was made in the Orioles clubhouse. Which immediately made me ask the question.
The internet, of course, immediately did its thing and decided to christen this monstrosity the…..<sigh> “Dong Bong.” Which has been trending on Twitter since last night.
The name made it all the way to the Orioles bench before the game was even over, as Orioles starter (and last night’s winning pitcher) Kyle Gibson made it clear that it is "*not* a Dong Bong.
I, for one, agree with Gibson. Call it a “Homer Hose”. Call it a “Home Run Funnel.” Call it…..something else. I understand that it was probably something that somebody came up with in the moment. I know that even the players probably get a kick out of that name. But the Orioles are, at the end of the day, are trying to run a family-friendly enterprise here. And yes, I know how that makes me the Dad with three kids sound.
All of which is to say that this contraption should not be referred to as the “Dong Bong.” But I know full well that the comments by Gibson and others about the name will almost certainly mean “Dong Bong” will enter Orioles fans vernacular and bow be talked about until the end of time…..
