As many of you know, I haven’t voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 2012. And as many of you know I infamously left the Republican Party after Maryland Republicans surrendered the gubernatorial election in 2022 by nominating Doug Mastriano’s errand boy Dan Cox.
The 2024 nomination of Donald Trump has given me no reason to return to the Republican Fold, between his statism, yellow-bellied foreign policy, wishy-washy position on abortion and guns, and of course January 6th. And Kamala Harris is even worse on the issues I care about than Trump is.
Ultimately, the fact is that neither party is committed to being pro-life. So with that, I am endorsing American Solidarity Party Presidential Candidate Peter Sonski.
Why Sonski?
Peter Sonski is a resident of Connecticut and has actual elected experience. He was elected as chairman of a local finance board and as a selectman (city councilman) in his hometown in Connecticut. He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Education and Outreach Director for the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center in New Haven.
The most important thing about Peter Sonski is this:
He has been active in the pro-life movement for decades and advocates for an end to capital punishment and clemency for people awaiting execution. Peter has worked to prevent the legalization of assisted suicide in Connecticut – a measure that has been introduced repeatedly since 1994.
As I mentioned last week in explaining why I was not voting for Larry Hogan, abortion is a red line for me. Within the precepts of the Church, it is permissible to vote for a candidate who is at least better on the issue than an opponent. But this creates such a gray area, especially concerning the modern Republican Party, as to create doubts about the continued ability of the pro-life movement to function in the modern GOP.
With Peter Sonski, it is crystal clear that he stands for life from conception to natural death. To quote Reagan, “a banner of bold, unmistakable colors with no pale pastels” on this crucial issue.
The Right to Life Matters
His Holiness Pope Francis recently addressed the election by suggesting that the choice for the American electorate is “the lesser of two evils” since both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are pro-abortion.
However, where I disagree with His Holiness on this is that the lesser of two evils is still evil and that we, as Americans and as Catholics, are not confined to only two candidates.
