Democratic Poll Shows Maryland Voters Want to Have Their Cake and Eat It Too
Maryland's "Middle Temperament" ain't in much of the middle anymore. And the Maryland Republican Party is currently uniquely unqualified to do much about it.
It has long been said that Maryland has a “Middle Temperament.” But out-of-state Marylanders are pushing Maryland to the tipping point.
In a poll by Democratic lobbyists and reported on by Maryland Matters this morning shows that Maryland voters support nearly every far-left policy proposal that one could imagine.
The pollster asked voters about several potential policy initiatives or government investments that could boost the state economy and in all cases found widespread support from Marylanders in both survey samples. The initiatives were:
State investments to keep the Washington Commanders’ stadium in Maryland (70% of statewide voters approved)
Policies that encourage the construction of data centers in the state (74%)
The redevelopment of underused areas in Baltimore for multifamily housing (80%)
Construction of more affordable housing generally (78%)
Expansion of offshore wind energy (72%)
A push for more biotech, cybersecurity and health care facilities (84%)
Establishment of a cyber hub near the proposed new FBI headquarters in Greenbelt (72%)
Taking advantage of the state’s laws protecting abortion rights and boosting education spending to attract out-of-state businesses (76%)
Doing a better job of promoting the state’s natural resources and history for tourism (80%)
Allowing beer and wine sales in grocery stores (76%)
Creating a better mass transit system in the Baltimore area (78%)
Oh, it gets worse:
58% of statewide voters, and 55% of Democrats in Baltimore City, said they would support a bill to legalize medical aid-in-dying.
More than two-thirds of statewide voters, and more than three-quarters of Baltimore Democrats, said they would support legislation that would encourage greater housing density.
59% of statewide voters, and 70% of Baltimore Democrats, support the state moving to “swiftly” regulate artificial intelligence.
70% of statewide voters, and 86% of Democrats in Baltimore, said the state should do more to reduce disparities in the state, especially as the U.S. Supreme Court chips away at diversity and equity programs.
Three-quarters of voters agreed that revitalization of Harborplace in downtown Baltimore, and state investments in the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens stadiums are important to the city’s success.
Now let’s temper this a bit. These were questions that were written by a far-left Democratic pollster in support of a Democratic lobbying firm that was written for far-left Democratic interests. It’s not a coincidence that the poll results and the poll questions were not released here. After all:
Statewide voters said fighting inflation should be policymakers’ top priority, with fighting crime a close second.
But.
This should be alarming to anybody who is conservative or right-leaning in Maryland. A large majority of Marylanders want to continue to spend obscene amounts of money to continue to grow an ever-expanding state government that will necessitate billions of dollars in tax increases to pay for.
On top of it, voters also support the immoral and unconscionable expansion of Maryland’s legal death regime.
At least people want beer and wine sold in stores, which will never happen due to Maryland’s byzantine process that makes all the right people a lot of money.
Maryland is in a lot of trouble. Conservatives in the General Assembly are outgunned. The Maryland Republican Party is completely ill-prepared to do anything to help (but hey, at least they have their damn Christmas Party, which is all some party leaders care about). QAnon Dan Cox and his conspiracy theories still hold large sway in the party. And Donald Trump is poised to again be the Republican standard-bearer, digging the hole even deeper
Things are going to get a lot worse for Maryland taxpayers before they get better. Either that or Maryland is finally doomed to become the next California with no means of recourse.
It’s a sad time to be a Marylander when no leader, no organization, is currently equipped to lead the state of this inevitable abyss.
