As a Christian, I strongly disagree with your apparent presumption that there are people who are inherently evil and incapable of redemption, and therefore we must punish them for life regardless of any changes in their attitude and behavior. The treatment of offenders needs to focus on work to get them to the point where they can be constructive participants in society and not a danger to it. Studies show that harsh punishment is not very effective at preventing crime. The revenge-minded attitude is harmful to society. Offenders should be incarcerated only as needed to protect society. If they are rehabilitated, continued incarceration does not serve society as well as not recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of each human being made in the image of God.
