Harris Opposed Resolution Supporting Moldova Independence
Maryland Congressman one of only 17 members to oppose resolution
Maryland Congressman Andy Harris was one of only seventeen members of the House of Representative to oppose a resolution supporting Moldova.
The Resolution, H.R. 833, was a resolution “Expressing support for Moldova’s democracy, independence, and territorial integrity and strengthening United States and Moldova relations.”
Moldova is an eastern European nation, bordering Ukraine, that is a former republic of the Soviet Union. They are rather pro-Western and have strenuously opposed Russian intervention in Ukraine.
They also have potential issues with Russia as well. Transnistria is a breakaway province of Moldova. Transnistria is virtually still a Soviet controlled area, and has very good relations with Russia. There are 1,500 Russian “peacekeepers” in the country to “keep the peace” between Transnistria and Moldova.
There is also some intrigue as to what Russia may do in the region. There have been a series of attacks in Transnistria this week that Moldova officials fear may serve as provocation for Russia to further intervene in the country.
So the timeliness of the resolution is very important. Despite these attacks Andy Harris joined sixteen other Republicans, most of them MAGA misfits, in opposing Molodovan independence and territorial integrity.
Why Harris, a career politician, would want to side with freshmen train wrecks like Marjorie Taylor Greene (who may have recently lied under oath), Madison Cawthorn (who apparently wears women’s underwear, took a gun to the airport for a second time and is under investigation for insider training) or Lauren Boebert is beyond me.
This should be a layup for all members of Congress to stand up for freedom and the rule of law. Harris, apparently, decided it was not all that important to him.
