How Money Still Walks
We know how the money walks. We know WHY the money walks. And yet, Maryland Democrats continue to make the same old bad decisions
The Comptroller’s office did a recent study as part of their “State of the Maryland Economy” series about Housing and the Economy. And it won’t surprise anybody to know that Maryland residents are leaving. Quickly.
The “highlights” of the report include this:
Further down the report discusses the sheer volume of outmigration from Maryland:
Since the pandemic, net domestic outmigration has increased, and the trend of moving to lower cost states has also increased. (Housing cost data by state is discussed in section 2.) Between 2021 and 2023, Maryland lost a net of 127,000 residents (590,000 moved out while 463,000 moved in). This is an average loss of more than 40,000 residents each year. While the top destination states were mostly the same in comparison to the 2010 to 2019 period, the volume of outmigration to southern states with a lower cost of living, including North Carolina and Texas, increased. In addition, between 2021 and 2023, Maryland started losing a meaningful number of residents to Tennessee and Georgia, a new trend.
It won’t surprise you to learn that Maryland residents are flocking to places that have not only a lower cost of living but a lower tax burden. It ALSO won’t surprise you to know that the outmigration really ramped up during the period where Democrats in the General Assembly were raising taxes and raising spending. A trend that, of course, has exploded during Wes Moore’s time in office.
And yet Comptroller Brooke Lierman buried this item in a report not about Maryland’s tax burden, but it one about “affordable housing” at a time when Moore is pushing his bonkers housing initiative. That should not surprise you, as Lierman was one of the Democrats in Annapolis voting for every single tax-hike imaginable, raising the tax burden on Marylanders and forcing them to make tough choices, including moving to a state they can afford to live in.
We know how the money walks. We know WHY the money walks. And yet, Democrats continue to make the same old bad decisions that benefit only the wealthy and the politically connected and pretend they don’t know why people migrate out. The incompetence is astounding.
