MAGA's Favorite Socialism Highlights a Bigger Conversation About Farm Subsidies

We are once again talking about a bailout for farmers thanks to Donald Trump's tariff meddling. At what point will Trump finally admit the error of his ways and turn his socialist spigot off?

You won’t be surprised to learn that farmers in America’s heartland are begging Washington for another handout:

Chris King has farmed Arkansas soil for 40 years. Last week, he stood before congressional staffers in Brookland with a message he never thought he’d deliver: “I have never been as worried as I am now about whether or not my kids and grandkids will be able to carry on,” he told local outlet KATV [1].

King wasn’t alone. Hundreds of Arkansas farmers packed the meeting, all carrying the same urgent plea for emergency funding. Their warning was stark: without immediate help, American agriculture faces its worst crisis in a generation.

"You are going to lose 25 to 30% of the farmers in this country if they don’t do something," said Scott Brown, who works 800 acres in Biggers. "In the short term, they have no choice but to mail us a check."

House Agriculture Committee Chairman House Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson is listening to their concerns and already considering a bill.

“I’m advocating that just a fraction of that (tariff) money would be used to invest in our farmers to keep them financially stable going forward,” Thompson said. “I think we need to be creative in how we do that. I appreciate the trade process — negotiations the president’s using and Jamieson Greer is leading — but I would say … a fraction of that would be a great investment actually in farm Bill 2.0.”

The fact that a MAGA Congressman like Thompson is advocating for a second bailout of farmers who are predominantly MAGA voters who voted for Trump because they objected to socialism should not be lost on anybody. These voters rightfully voted against socialism. And now they are demanding more socialism to save them from the consequences of their vote. Becuase the reason so many farmers are in this predicament: tariffs.

For some, tariffs are what tipped them over the edge. “Tariffs are the ice cream on the cake of a perfect storm,” Brown said.

Without tariffs, U.S. soybeans shipped to China would undercut Brazil’s prices. With them, American crops can’t compete.

It’s almost like tariffs are harmful to the American consumer, American worker, and American producer. Just like everybody with a lick of understanding of economics understands.

A bailout would not be the first or even the second time that the Trump Administration started throwing more federal money at farmers.
