Maryland College Republican Chair Posts Picture with infamous Bigot, Reschedules White Supremacist Guest Speaker
It’s not hard to imagine why active Maryland College Republicans chapter membership has cratered with this kind of nonsense coming from the top
Maryland College Republicans Chairman Colin McEvers sure seems to love hanging out with bigots. And today emphasizes it.
Earlier today, McEvers posted a photograph of himself with College Republicans of America National Political Director Kai Schwemmer, taken at the recent and lightly attended Conservative Political Action Conference in Texas. McEvers referred to Schwemmer as “The GOAT” i.e. The Greatest of All Time.
Schwemmer has a history of saying things that are, bluntly, offensive to anybody with an ounce of Judeo-Christian beliefs:
Kai Schwemmer, the newly appointed College Republicans of America political director, has made racist, antisemitic, homophobic and sexist statements while espousing extremist rightwing views on abortion, a Guardian review of livestream recordings can reveal.
Schwemmer said he would accept a world in which slavery was legal if abortion was criminalised, describes himself as “very much an anti-universal suffrage guy” and accepts a supporter’s description of him as “our Mormon Nick Fuentes” – referring to the white nationalist influencer whose platform he streamed on for years.
There’s also, naturally, a long history of anti-semitism as well:
Last December, Schwemmer argued — wrongly — that the CEOs of weapons manufacturers Raytheon and Boeing are Jewish Zionists responsible for helping to shore up U.S. military support for Israel.
He also loudly criticized the University of Florida’s decision in March to close the campus’s CRA chapter after a member was allegedly pictured making a Nazi salute, calling it an example of “cancel culture.”
At the same time, he has posted on social media in support of Florida Republican candidate for governor James Fishback, a firebrand known for dropping terms like “goyslop” (used to refer to ultra-processed foods created, so the conspiracy goes, by Jewish food manufacturers to sicken white Americans and others).
Statements like these, plus Schwemmer’s links to Fuentes, prompted Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, to post on social media: “Appointing Kai Schwemmer, a longtime ally of white supremacist Nick Fuentes, as political director signals the College Republicans of America is normalizing antisemitism and white supremacy, full stop.”
Schwemmer has also argued that voters in Florida should support Fishback due to his “trustworthy physiognomy,” or facial features, arguing that his challenger Byron Donalds has a “deceitful” appearance. Donalds is Black.
It’s not hard to imagine why active Maryland College Republicans chapter membership has cratered with this kind of nonsense coming from the top….
Why McEvers would choose to associate himself with somebody like Schwemmer in a state like Maryland while simultaneously running for the House of Delegates in a majority-minority district can only make sense to somebody as terminally online and disconnected from the real world as McEvers appears to be.
This photo was posted on the very same day that McEvers announced that the Maryland College Republicans have rescheduled a previously canceled event with local white supremacist Jared Taylor.
The event is open to the public, which will undoubtedly turn into the shitshow that McEvers craves.
Sadly, none of these were April Fool’s Jokes.
It is unclear exactly what McEvers is looking to gain from any of this. But between today’s actions, condemnation from the Maryland Republican Party, his recent use of slurs, and his focus on poorly attended pro-ICE rallies in Salisbury, it seems that McEvers is merely interested in attention and not in relevancy, policy movement, or real political change. It’s a shame since Maryland needs younger people, particularly ones with a conservative bent, in public service. But the last thing Maryland needs is another young George Mahoney, Matthew Heimbach, or Robert Lloyd.
