Maryland General Assembly Ends Its Reign of Terror
Maryland took several huge steps backward in the last ninety days.
If you have been paying any attention to what has been going on in Annapolis over the course of the last ninety days, you will know that Maryland Democrats have been running roughshod over Maryland’s working people.
Here is a small sample of the pieces of legislation the General Assembly passed during the just concluded Session.
Restrictions on where concealed carry permit holders can carry their weapons (notwithstanding the Constitutional issues the bill creates);
Allowing union members to deduct their union dues from their state income taxes;
“Equity” requirements in transportation planning;
The “Trans Health Equity Act” to require taxpayers to pay for sex change operations, including for children;
Requirements for colleges and universities to assist students and the community in obtaining abortions, the so-called “Sex Trafficker Protection Act”;
Adding “Reproductive Freedom” i.e. adding abortion to the Maryland State Declaration of Rights
Establishing legal weed;
Banning police from using the smell of weed as a reason to search a vehicle;
The “Reproductive Health Protection Act”, which bans people from Maryland from being forced to testify in another state regarding abortion;
Raised the minimum wage;
One bill that, mercifully, did not pass? Assisted suicide has again failed, though it will again come back with a vengeance in 2024. I guess Democrats figured they killed enough innocent people with their aborton bills for one Session.
Governor Wes Moore wrote in The Sun today that the Session was “one of the ‘most productive legislative sessions for any Maryland governor at any time’.” But the late UCLA Basketball Coach John Wooden gave us one of my favorite quotes of all time: “Never confuse activity for achievement.”
Wes Moore may want to tout “how productive” the session was. But what did the Session really accomplish other than highlight the dichotomy between Democratic words and Democratic deeds?
Democrats passed a likely unconstitutional restriction on where concealed carry permits can and can’t be used in order to “save lives”. Never mind the fact that the only people impacted by such a restriction are law-abiding gun owners, which in and of itself makes Maryland less safe.
But at the same time, Maryland Democrats made sure to make it easier to abort unborn children by a number of pieces of legislation, including making the right to kill your unborn child a part of the State Constitution.
“We must protect people from guns in order to protect their right to kill their children” is a helluva juxtaposition.
One of the other bills passed by the General Assembly was a bill that would address sexual abuse against children by eliminating the statute of limitations on lawsuits against alleged perpetrators. But while attempting to provide justice to the victims of child sexual abuse, Democrats are simultaneously empowering Medicare to pay for the abuse of children by paying for “gender-affirming care.”
Democrats passed a minimum wage hike in order to “improve the economy” but don’t care about what they are actually doing to it.
Democrats voted for what is ultimately a political handout to union members by allowing them to deduct dues from their income taxes. But would not even bring to a vote a bill that would eliminate the sales tax on musical instruments purchased by school students.
Obviously to Democrats, giving unions a handout is more important than helping parents.
There are tons of other juxtapositions that will become apparent as more and more bills are signed over the course of the next few weeks. It will take months before we know the true damage of what Maryland Democrats has done to Maryland’s working families. Yes, it is true that Democrats were “productive”. But just because Democrats were “productive” doesn’t mean that Maryland is a better place to live today than it was ninety days ago. Because Maryland has taken a huge, huge step backward during this year’s Session.
How did Maryland lose its way? There are reasons. If you look. More on that later.
