Maryland General Assembly Unleashes Disaster After Disaster
Primary. Elections. Have. Consequences.
The Maryland General Assembly adjourned sine die yesterday, and they couldn’t get the hell out of Annapolis fast enough for taxpayers.
The Baltimore Sun shares some of the lowlights of this year’s session.
Passage of the Uber Tax on ridesharing services:
Increase in the Vehicle Registration Tax;
Establishment of a state fund to funnel taxpayer dollars to abortion clinics for security;
Creating draconian civil liability standards for gun manufacturers:
Massive increases in state spending for “anti-poverty” programs;
Protecting those engaged in sex change operations and treatment from criminal and civil liability.
And yet that wasn’t even all of the disastrous legislation that passed in the final few hours of the session.
On top of that, a massive housing package was passed that spends tons of taxpayer dollars and limits the rights of property owners to use their property as they see fit:
One of the bills that was sent to the governor Monday was House Bill 538, which aims to incentivize developers to add affordable housing options in future developments and would allow certain development projects to exceed typical density limits if the new development incorporates a certain percentage of affordable housing units.
The other is HB 693, known as the Renters’ Rights and Stabilization Act, Office of Tenants and Landlord Affairs in state government, which would help tenants know what protections and legal actions they have under Maryland law. The bill also raises certain fees involved in the eviction process to reduce the number of unnecessary evictions, among other measures…..
….The final bill in Moore’s housing package is HB 599, which would create the Maryland Community Investment Corporation, a state entity that would make loans or investments aimed at developing and improving low-income communities.
That’s right, the same folks who want to ban gasoline-powered cars passed legislation to exceed density requirements to put even more strain on Maryland’s resources and environment.
Over the last ninety days, Democrats in the General Assembly took proactive measures to make Maryland residents have less money, to make urban areas even more overcrowded, and to hurt Mayland’s environmental outlook. On top of it, they committed state money to protect the killing of Maryland’s most innocent victims: unborn children.
It’s a sad day in Maryland, and it should remind voters of the stakes our state faces in 2026.
At the same time, Republican voters should again take a minute and add up all that has happened in the last two legislative sessions. All of what I listed above was avoidable had Republican primary voters not surrendered the 2022 General Election by nominating Dan Cox as their gubernatorial nominee. His presence on the ticket actively harmed Republicans up and down the ballot. And now all Marylanders are reaping the consequences of their vote.
Primary Elections have major consequences, for parties and states alike.
Sad. The one bright spot is that they didn't pass HB558, mandating gender ideology be taught to all kids starting in kindergarten with no opt out. They'll teach it anyway of course, but at least it's not illegal not to. For now.
