Montgomery Republican Central Committee Stumping For Peroutka?
Second Central Committee involving itself in a Republican Primary
The Montgomery County Republican Central Committee is continuing to promote events with Michael Peroutka despite Peroutka’s candidacy for Attorney General.
In their weekly email this week, the Montgomery County GOP continued to promote a weeks-long event featuring Peroutka as the instructor.
Peroutka, who has a warped view of the Constitution, filed for Attorney General last week.
It is unclear why Peroutka is being allowed to continue with his speaker series under the auspices of the Montgomery County Central Committee while he pursues his candidacy. It’s problematic on two fronts, however.
The Central Committee is not allowed to endorse candidates in contested primaries. This is the second time a county has done this recently; Dorchester County was de facto endorsing Dan Cox as far back as October.
It is a slap in the face to Peroutka’s primary election opponent, Jim Shalleck. Shalleck is a long-time Republican activist. He has served as Chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Elections and has run many thankless campaigns for office, including as the Republican nominee for Montgomery County Executive in 2014.
It is puzzling and bizarre that the Montgomery County Central Committee would insult one of their own lifelong activists in this manner. Jim Shalleck was working for Republicans back when Michael Peroutka was running for President against George W. Bush. It’s a weird, unfortunate decision and one that should be reversed.
