Moore Redistricting Scheme Has Nothing to Do With Democracy...
....and EVERYTHING to do with 2028
Maryland Governor Wes Moore may have repeatedly denied that he is running for President in 2028, but his actions continue to say otherwise.
Moore announced today that he is, in fact, seating a Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission to draw new Congressional Districts for the 2026 Election after all.
Gov. Wes Moore (D), in a statement released to Maryland Matters, announced the formation of a five-member Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission, to be led by U.S. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.). It is the latest move to redraw Maryland’s eight congressional districts with an eye toward eliminating the last Republican district.
“My commitment has been clear from day one — we will explore every avenue possible to make sure Maryland has fair and representative maps,” Moore said in the statement. “This commission will ensure the people are heard. I thank those who have raised their hands to lead this process, and I am confident in their ability to gather the views and perspectives of a broad range of voices throughout the state.”
Moore said the commission is charged with making recommendations to the governor and General Assembly on improving how the state’s eight congressional districts are drawn and ensuring “fair” congressional maps.
I guess Moore forgot that time back in August when he threatened to join a multi-state lawsuit against Texas for doing the same thing.
The irony of Moore suggesting that he has appointed a commission to lead a process toward “fair and representative maps” is that he appointed a Sitting Democratic United States Senator to lead the commission. This ensures, like so many redistricting commissions in Maryland’s past, that the districts will be drawn with partisan hackery in mind instead of fair results.
Let me remind you that even the map we have NOW was the result of Democrats in the General Assembly tinkering with the map drawn by Governor Larry Hogan’s bipartisan redistricting commission. A Commission that had NO elected officials serving on it.
This is what we got instead.
What are we likely to see this Moore Commission propose? Well, that’s certainly baked in the cake, and will likely look like some of the shameful districts we had in the last cycle.
Except this time, Wes Moore is looking to take on Andy Harris and ensure Maryland is a one-party state at the State and Federal levels.
While I am no fan of Andy Harris or the job his wife Nicole has done as Maryland Republican Party Chair, Nicole Harris was 100 percent correct in her statement about the commission this morning.
So why is Moore going through all of this? Let me take you back to what I wrote about this in August:
The fact that Moore is even talking about wasting taxpayer money and legislative time on a Congressional Redistricting Plan when Maryland controls 7/8 of the delegation shows the absurdity of unstructured chaos unleashed by Donald Trump and the Texas GOP in the first place. But since Moore is running for President, Marylanders will be forced to play along with this national charade of shame.
The irony of all of this is the fact that it will be nearly impossible to change the makeup of the Delegation to consist of nothing but Democrats. There is almost no permutation of Congressional District that makes it impossible for there to be no districts that would not elect a Republican….
…The bottom line with this charade is just how it highlights Wes Moore’s failure as a Governor. As Maryland continues to struggle with the ramifications of federal budget cuts, tariffs, and Moore’s self-inflicted budget crisis, he is focused instead on national politics. Moore continues, as he always does, putting politics over people in a way that highlights how he is little more than a dollar store Gavin Newsom.
Wes Moore has no real interest in “protecting democracy” any more than any other Democrat who has ever proposed gerrymandered Congressional and legislative districts, ESPECIALLY in Maryland, where democracy is not at all protected by heavily gerrymandered legislative districts that vary the number of Delegates any particular voter has serving them. Nor does he have any interest in a “fair” process when he appoints an elected official to lead a kangaroo court with a preordained outcome. And Wes Moore, having the nerve to suggest that “This commission will ensure the people are heard,” tells us that he and his team have been getting high on their own supply.
No, this isn’t about democracy. This isn’t about Maryland. This truly isn’t even about Congress. This reeks of a politician desperate to be President at any cost and afraid he is falling behind Gavin Newsom and others in the left-wing street cred that gets you a Democratic nomination in 2028. Like Martin O’Malley before him, Wes Moore is using Marylanders as pawns for his national ambitions. And we all should be completely disgusted by it.
