New Year, New Results
The Las Vegas Wifflers outlast 23 other teams to win the Mid Atlantic Wiffle Opening Day Tournament
A record 24-team descended on York, Pennsylvania for the 2023 Mid-Atlantic Wiffle Opening Day tournament. In an unusual twist, it was a tournament not won by the Juggernauts.
The two-time defending MAW Champions and two-time defending World Champion Juggs made it all the way to the semi-finals before falling to the eventual champions, the Las Vegas Wifflers.
The championship final, where Las Vegas defeated Wiff, Inc. came under the lights at Dallastown (PA) Community Park and did not end until after 11 PM local time. The tournament was delayed for several hours by rain and thunderstorms, forcing the shift of the semi-finals and finals away from MAW’s home, Shi Wiffleball Park.
The games of the day, however, were between ERL and Wiff Inc. After an off-season of drama between the two intertwined squads, they squared off in an epic eight-inning contest that ended on a walk-off home run in extra innings. But in a late-night rematch Wiff Inc. eliminated ERL in the semi-finals.
Las Vegas takes an early lead in the MAW Championship standings for the year, but it is unknown if they will make the trip east for any other MAW events this year. As participation in two MAW tournaments is required to make the playoffs, it is unclear if the Wifflers will have an opportunity to compete for the coveted MAW championship.
