Special Session was a Waste of Taxpayer Money
None of what happened today could not have waited until January 14th
The Maryland General Assembly convened in a Special Session today. What did they accomplish in that special session? Well;
Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk was elected as the next Speaker of the House; and,
The House and Senate addressed Governor Wes Moore’s vetoes from the 2025 Regular Session.
And then they adjourned Sine Die. That’s it. It’s over.
No legislation was introduced during the session.
There were no emergency issues that the General Assembly needed to deal with during the session.
In fact, no issues AT ALL were brought to the forefront during this legislative session.
Sure, there are plenty of things to talk about, including how many of the vetoes the General Assembly overrode were bills Wes Moore vetoed on policy grounds, not because they were duplicative. That Moore is out of touch with his own Democratic caucus is an issue that will require careful study heading into 2025.
But that does not change the fact that Wes Moore called a special session for no reason. No budget issues. No key issue, like sports betting. Nothing that could not have waited until the General Assembly session convenes for real on January 14th.
Calling a pointless Special Session is the kind of symbolic act that defines exactly the wasteful spending of the Wes Moore years. Taxpayer dollars were spent for no reason, with nothing of substance to show for it.
