The Monday Thought
The phrase RINO gets thrown around a lot these days. Usually, it’s used by Republicans who joined the party five minutes ago and have next to no conservative beliefs beyond undying loyalty to their God-king Donald Trump.
And in the Year Of Our Lord 2024, they may have a point.
The insult dates from the 1990s, when it meant a Republican who was squishy on conservative issues. Now it is shorthand for any Republican the former president deems insufficiently loyal personally.
The irony is that many Republicans originally regarded Mr. Trump as a RINO. He was from deep-blue New York, had donated to and supported Democrats before settling on the GOP, and on issues from abortion to guns expressed positions more typical of a wealthy resident of Manhattan than an aspiring Republican nominee for president….
….So who’s the RINO now? In 2016, Mr. Trump had to prove he wasn’t a RINO by embracing the GOP agenda. In 2020, thanks to Mr. Trump, Republican priorities now include positions that once would have been regarded as selling out. These include protectionism for preferred industries, a retreat from overseas alliances and hands off entitlements.
In the process, the word RINO has lost any link to Republican policy. All it really means today is someone Mr. Trump doesn’t like.
The Republican Party has left conservatism behind, instead making total obedience to Donald Trump the only factor that determines your worthiness as a Republican.
Is it any wonder then that the conservatives who attend CPAC have been replaced with actual Nazis, among other goobers?
In the past, it was an event that required overflow rooms and had multiple breakout sessions. It was a place for the Republican elite to hobnob and network. Now, despite this being an election year, videos showed half the seats empty, and breakout sessions were scarce and timed to not conflict with speeches. The main stage—the only stage—featured panels on whether Michelle Obama is secretly gearing up to be president and talks on “Stopping Georgey Soros,” bizarrely ascribing a cutesy nickname to the GOP’s favorite boogeyman.
The Republican Party is dying, caused by people whose only loyalty is to a man instead of an idea or even a country. What collateral damage its death takes with it will be anybody’s guess…
