The Most Ignorant of All Columns
Michelle Deal-Zimmerman writes one of the most unserious newspaper columns of all time.
The Baltimore Sun runs bad columns frequently. One of the worst that I have ever read, however, I went online yesterday morning.
Just read this absolutely asinine opening from Michelle Deal-Zimmerman:
Michelle Obama has been traveling Europe, dancing on stage with Bruce Springsteen in Barcelona and enjoying the life of an empty-nester with two bestsellers and a husband who has a reliable government pension.
It’s good that she’s having fun before getting down to the real task that awaits her this summer: moving to Maryland to become the state’s next U.S. senator — and its first Black senator to boot.
So Deal-Zimmerman, from, her ivory tower up in Baltimore, has decreed that somebody who doesn’t even live here and has repeatedly said she does not aspire to public office should move to Maryland and be immediately anointed as the first black female U.S. Senator from Maryland.
What’s even more bizarre about Deal-Zimmerman’s ignorant column is that her column posted about thirty minutes before Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, a black woman who happens to run the most affluent African-American majority county in the U.S. which happens to be in Maryland, announced her candidacy for U.S. Senate.
It isn’t like the Alsobrooks announcement came out of the ether. People have speculated about Alsobrooks running statewide for years. It was widely reported on Monday that an Alsobrooks was imminent. So why did Deal-Zimmerman decide to write such a goofy column? And, more importantly, why did The Sun decide to actually publish this thing beyond the typical Baltimore-centric viewpoint of the paper?
Look, this is an unserious column and would be taken unseriously if it were written by a college freshman in a zine, much less by an advisory member of a major newspaper Editorial Board. Baltimore deserves so much more from its alleged paper of record….
