Food For Thought: What Is A Conservative?
The Monday Thought
In the TV show House, one of the diseases that the medical team routinely considered was Munchausen Syndrome. This is what Munchausen Syndrome is:
Munchausen syndrome is a factitious disorder, a mental disorder in which a person repeatedly and deliberately acts as if they have a physical or mental illness when they are not really sick. Munchausen syndrome is considered a mental illness because it is associated with severe emotional difficulties.
Munchausen syndrome, named for Baron von Munchausen, an 18th-century German officer who was known for embellishing the stories of his life and experiences, is the most severe type of factitious disorder. Most of the symptoms in people with Munchausen syndrome are related to physical illness -- symptoms such as chest pain, stomach problems, or fever -- rather than those of a mental disorder.
I want you to focus on the part about Baron von Munchausen. How he was known for “embellishing the stories of his life and experiences.
I would like to propose a new type of Munchausen Syndrome; Munchausen by Politics. The idea that somebody, somewhere is out to get you and that things are never their own fault.
Patient Zero for Munchausen by Politics is this guy:
Former Del. Dan Cox, the 2022 Republican nominee for governor in Maryland, appears to have filed to run for Congress in the 6th District on Monday.
But in a brief interview, Cox, who is contemplating the 6th District race to replace U.S. Rep. David Trone (D-6th), said it wasn’t him.
Someone filed electronic paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Monday, entering Cox into the 6th District race. But Cox said he and his wife Valerie are still discussing the possibility of him running for Congress next year and haven’t made any definitive plans.
“We didn’t make a decision,” Cox said. “I’d like to know who did this.”
So yeah. To recap, as we reported here, Dan Cox filed for Congress. Cox says that he did not file for Congress and actually blamed <sigh> a Twitterbot for filing on his behalf.
Which of course would be believable except for all of the other evidence to the contrary.
Exhibit A:
Cox said he would contact the FEC to see if he could figure out who filed the paperwork and how to stop the unauthorized candidacy from moving forward.
It’s possible, though not likely, that someone else named Dan Cox is seeking the congressional seat.
However, the FEC registration uses the same address that Cox used for his 2022 campaign for governor, a post office box in Frederick. In 2018, when he won a seat in the House of Delegates, and in 2016, when he unsuccessfully ran for a congressional seat in the 8th District, Cox used a P.O. Box in Emmitsburg.
Exhibit B would be, quite literally, his entire political career.
“Larry Hogan tried to arrest me.”
“Larry Hogan is a Chinese Spy.”
“Larry Hogan is part of a shadow government.”
“The election was stolen from Donald Trump”
“Somebody stole the election from me.”
“The Establishment is propping up my opponent.”
“Larry Hogan is propping up Wes Moore.”
Cox has made a living off of seeing things that are not there and lying about the things that are there. He sees conspiracies around every corner and causes for things that just aren’t there. Nothing is his fault. Everything is caused by shadowy agencies, conspiracies, and people who are out to get him.
Cox’s supporters are also afflicted too, but with Munchausen by Politics by Proxy. Much, in the same way, they think that Donald Trump is “standing between the deep state and them” or whatever, they think that the “organized” effort against Cox is an affront against them.
The most likely outcome of all of this was that Cox filed his paperwork on the 3rd of July when nobody was paying attention, a bot caught it, tweeted it, and it was reported by The Duckpin and others. Then, when Cox thought he could contain it but learned the story had leaked, he concocted a story blaming somebody or something else for this. Notwithstanding the fact that nobody benefits from filing false paperwork with the Federal Election Commission establishing a campaign on his behalf.
Occam’s razor here.
Cox has ten kids and a wife and, bluntly, he should probably spend more time focusing on his family than tilting at windmills and creating conspiracies. Cox needs to get right with God and get whatever help he needs so he can stop beclowning himself in the ways he continues to do so.
