The Monday Thought
I’m writing this minutes after the Fighting Swifties Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in the second overtime game in Super Bowl history. Instead of some deep thoughts about policy, here are some less deep thoughts about the game and its outcome.
The Chiefs are officially the most unlikeable team in the NFL. They have replaced the Patriots in this regard. The act entitled, they get all of the iffy calls, and of course, they’ve now won three Super Bowls in four years.
That being said: Patrick Mahomes is good at football.
TV Ads: The ads were better this year than they have been in recent years but two stand head and shoulders above all others.
He Gets Us, but they don’t: Once again, the internet was full of anti-Christian trolls complaining about the “He Gets Us” ads because they are funded by the Servant Foundation. The Servant Foundation is accused of….being Christian and supporting Christian causes, ergo, the He Gets Us ads are bad even though anybody who spent more than five seconds watching the ad, which focused on Jesus washing the feet of the disciples, should have been able to understand that the message transcends faith and politics.
There appears to have been less complaining about the Hallow app ad featuring Mark Wahlberg.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr: A Super PAC supporting conspiracy nut RFK Jr ran one of the more appalling ads you’ll ever see by doing a copypasta of a 1960 John F. Kennedy TV ad with his face superimposed over the JFK bits. They spent $7 million for the privilege of airing this.
Running game? What is it about the Chiefs defense that takes opposing offensive coordinators away from their schemes? Both in the Super Bowl and in the AFC Championship, the 49ers and Ravens respectively got away form the run during large portions of the game. It was most obvious for the 49ers in parts of the second half when the Chiefs chipped away at the league and Christian McAffrey was practically missing in action. At one point in the 4th quarter he had but 34 yards on the ground.
Taylor Swift: The people who are complaining about Taylor Swift’s presence at the game REALLY need to get a life. If anything, they should be happy that Swift’s presence gave dads and daughters a new opportunity to bond over football.
Joe Biden: The outcome gave the President of the United States to dunk on the conspiracy theorist on Twitter, because this is 2024 and nothing matters.
It is far worse, of course, that idiots were pushing this kind of conspiracy theories that somehow the NFL, Joe Biden, and Taylor Swift were all involved in a conspiracy for the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl since the Chiefs haven’t won a Super Bowl since….last year.
But now that the game is over, we can focus on the thing that really maters…..
…..that pitchers and catchers report in two days.
