Gift Ideas for your Woke Friends: Satirical Christmas gift ideas for “woke” Democrats are a playful way to poke fun at certain political and social attitudes.
Cox Botched Pearl Harbor Tribute: This has moved beyond whether or not Dan Cox can use spellcheck. It’s moved to the point where we have to ask if Dan Cox has any basic intelligence whatsoever.
The Saga of O'Malley's Folly May Finally End: Martin O'Malley saddled Baltimore with a white elephant and everybody knew it. Brandon Scott may finally end Baltimore's most expensive mistake.
The Monday Thought
If you are anything resembling a baseball fan, you know that P/DH Shohei Ohtani announced on Saturday that he was leaving the Los Angeles Angels for the Los Angeles Dodgers for the richest contract in sports history: 10 years, $700 million1.
That was a surprise to a lot of people, as on Friday it was widely expected that Ohtani was signing not with the Dodgers, but with the Toronto Blue Jays.
This tweet started a lot of the online firestorm:
Then a Dodgers Blog report it as fact:
The wait is over: Shohei Ohtani is signing with the Toronto Blue Jays.
According to multiple sources who spoke with Dodgers Nation on Friday, the two-way superstar has ended the suspense of the most lucrative free-agent pursuit in baseball history. A formal announcement is expected as early as tonight.
I really want to know who those sources were….
The story completely fell apart by Friday afternoon, though we got this gem from the businessman who was actually on the plane everybody was tracking from Anaheim to Toronto.
We don’t know the entire story at this point, but MLB Network was reporting that the Blue Jays were the frontrunners on Friday, but that the Dodgers increased their offer late in the night on Friday.
I’m talking about all this to talk about something that has nothing to do with baseball.
It was Jonathan Swift who wrote: “Falsehood flies, and the truth comes limping after it.” In this instance, an incorrect story became the dominant narrative and it takes a long time, if ever, for the truth to be fully assimilated into the public consciousness……
….kinda like Donald Trump’s fabricated story about the 2020 election being stolen.
….kinda like the pro-Palestinian story about how Israel is indiscriminately bombing civilians in Gaza.
…kinda like the fabricated story on the alt-right that January 6th was a “false flag” operation by the FBI.
….kinda like the narrative after every mass shooting that the shooter was X, Y, or Z.
Our country has been so consumed by bullshit stories that it is impossible for some people to accept the truth, even when it is right in front of them. It has had major consequences for our society. And I fear it will have ever larger and more devastating consequences for society in the near future.
Though a ton of that money is deferred money.
