A bit of research and accurate writing would prevent the Cox campaign's misinformation.
Yet again, our Republican ticket for Maryland Governor think they are skilled and practiced in the field of medicine? A bit of research and accurate writing would prevent their misinformation campaign and these serious unforced errors.
Gordan Schifanelli posted this tweet and without researching, she immediately went to her talking points.
I am not seeing any attempt by Ms. Schifanelli to determine if, in fact, the Covid vaccine had anything to do with the stroke that this young student experienced while at school.
In fact, there is NO reference to this student having had the Covid vaccine that I was able to find.
If Ms. Schifanelli had researched the incident, she would have found out that this conversation was more about the racial injustices occurring in delivering timely and adequate medical care to minority groups. From the article:
‘The mother's mind immediately turned to a stroke, a medical emergency that runs in the family. Hicks has experienced three strokes in the past 10 years and continues to live with side effects, including weakness on her left side and reliance on a wheelchair.
"I hate to say it was a racial thing, but it really seems as though if my son was a different race they would have treated him right away," Hicks said. "My son said he felt like they didn't take him seriously."
Eight in 10 Black Americans believe race impacts the quality of their health care, a survey from the Pulse of Black America revealed last month.
Another study in JAMA Network Open determined there was "deeply rooted anti-Black racism" in the field of academic medicine.
A University of Chicago study from February analyzed 40,000 hospital notes on more than 18,000 patients and found that Black patients were more than twice as likely as their white counterparts to be characterized with "negative descriptors."’
Frankly, Ms. Schifanelli provides a perfect talking point for the Wes Moore Campaign!
Then Dan Cox then makes his own unforced error.
In a campaign follow-up letter, Cox wrote:
Let me provide you the exact words from Wes Moore:
“During the height of the pandemic, we had a member of the General Assembly look to impeach Governor Hogan for his handling of it. . . because Governor Hogan chose to follow the science, because he chose to listen to the CDC, and the NIH, because he chose to listen to JHU and the University of Maryland. That member of the General Assembly is Dan Cox. And by the way, he stood alone. Even his Republican colleagues could not back that. So when we talk about what it means and what we are going to talk about in a Moore/Miller administration, we are going to follow the science. We are going to listen to doctors and medical experts, and NOT ideologues. We are going to ensure that we keep the safety of the people of Maryland first and foremost in all of the decisions that we are going to make. And we are going to work across the state, across the aisle , working with professionals in order to help us make those decisions.”
See what Cox did? He put Wes Moore’s statement in quotes, but failed to capture it all, and he took words out of context. Dan Cox ignored the true meaning of Wes Moore’s comment. Cox’s “quote” is not an accurate depiction of Wes Moore’s comments and Dan Cox knows this.
Just as egregious is Cox’s anti-science stance. Dan Cox will NOT use any experts during a pandemic? From Johns Hopkins, a global leader in medicine? Or University of Maryland, another national and world leader in medicine. The FDA? NIH, CDC? Pharma/Biotech and Diagnostic Lab experts?
Dan Cox has promoted HCQ and IVM when there was NO good medical evidence to support its use. Dan does not understand Evidence-Based Medicine. Dan does not understand how mAB’s work, and why we stop using a mAB when, in fact, it is of no use for the latest variant. Dan does not understand that masking is one of the NPI’s that when used alongside all other measures actually has proven to reduce transmission. Dan does not understand how to read clinical trials. Dan clearly does not want us to be prepared for the next pandemic when he has so destructively criticized the purpose of Connected DMV. Dan does not understand the sequencing of a virus in order to obtain necessary information about the variants. Dan doesn’t understand what genetic sequencing allows biotech to do.
Dan Cox’s anti-science viewpoint is highly irresponsible and damned unconscionable.
We cannot have Dan Cox as Governor of Maryland. Our lives and our health depend on knowing we have a competent person in the office – who will consult with all the experts to keep us safe – no matter the crisis.
