Wedekind Disqualified from Governor's Race
Can you really be disqualified from a race you weren't trying to win?
According to the Maryland State Board of Elections, Republican gubernatorial candidate Kurt Wedekind has been disqualified from the race for Governor.
It is unclear what caused Wedekind to be disqualified. Wedekind’s campaign did file botched campaign finance paperwork at the January reporting deadline.
In a statement posted on social media by Wedekind’s running mate Shannon Wright, Wright framed the shift as a “withdrawal” from the race as part of a “Leadership Shift” in the Wedekind/Wright campaign, which is rather comical.
Wright states that she will be the candidate for Governor.
Under Maryland State Law, Wright has the authority to act on behalf of the campaign and designate herself as the candidate for Governor. She will now be required to select a new running mate.
Ultimately, this will have little impact on the Governor’s race. Wedekind and Wright have been practically non-existent on the campaign trail for the last six months. Wedekind’s campaign was a long shot (at best), and his replacement with Wright, a perennial candidate for office in Baltimore and a former candidate in New Jersey, is a step back from even that.
